The Nsaba Science Foundation for Girl Child Education is a local NGO which provides free computer training, as well as Science, Mathematics and English Language lessons to girls in public Junior Secondary Schools in the Nsaba Traditional Area.

OBJECTIVE

To resource the promotion of education to adolescent girls in the rural communities of the Nsaba Traditional Area in the Agona District, Central Region, Ghana.

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES

The following are the activities organized by the Foundation for the students in the program:

Computer Training - Intensive computer training that provides computer literacy and imparts marketable computer skills to the students.

Extra Classes - Extra classes in Science, Mathematics and English language are held for the students after normal school hours to compliment regular classroom lessons.

Science Laboratory - Specially designed science laboratory classes are organized for students to gain practical science education to compliment classroom theory.

Science Fair -  Students are encouraged to design simple, but practical problem-solving science projects which are exhibited at the Annual Science Fair organized by the Foundation.

Quiz Competition - Once a year each girl is invited to participate in a quiz competition. The quiz is composed of questions based on all the subject areas.

Science Trips - Periodic science trips are organized for the students in the program to provide practical contact with places of scientific interest.

OUR OPERATION

The computer resource facility is open twelve hours a day to allow for maximum utilization. Computer training is also available for interested community members.  The students in the program receive training from local resource personnel and currently volunteers from Norway and Canada.

OUR STUDENTS

The girls in the program are chosen from the five public Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in the Nsaba Traditional Area based on their performance in school.

OUR HISTORY

The Nsaba Science Foundation for Girl Child Education was founded in 2002 and classes began in September 2003. The Foundation started with one computer and ten girls from JSS 1 (Grade 7). It has now expanded to include eight computers, one printer and one UPS, with forty girls now enrolled in the program.

PROJECTS

The Nsaba Presbyterian Church has recently allocated a more spacious building for the Foundation to renovate. This will house a permanent Computer Resource Centre to avoid a looming accommodation crisis. When renovations are complete, the building will house a computer facility, a science laboratory and a library; thus accommodating one hundred people at any given time.

APPEAL FOR FUNDS

The Foundation is hosting its First Anniversary in May 2005, and is therefore appealing for funds to renovate and refurbish the new Computer Resource Centre.
